About CEBRAP

The Brazilian Center of Analysis and Planning-CEBRAP, was founded in 1969 by a diverse group of academic professors sacked from the campuses during Brazil’s military dictatorship, with the aim of developing a critical and independent think tank in Brazil.

For 46 years Cebrap has stood out in the national academic environment due to the multidisciplinary quality of its research, publishings and seminars, along with the accuracy and impact caused by its public debates. Cebrap has completed more than 500 research projects and worked with approximately 200 national and international associates, consolidating its position as a high standard research unit mostly known as a state-of-art knowledge center for the human sciences.  Cebrap works with the elite of the academic and research community in the country, hosting outstanding researchers who hold forums on current affairs.

Cebrap is a global research center which establishes partnerships with institutions, development agencies and civil associations from various countries around the world, such as: England, USA, Germany, France, India, China, Mexico, South Africa, among others. According to a 2014 ranking made by the University of Pennsylvania, Cebrap has been recognized as the 35rd world’s best Think Tank in the area of public policy. The institution conducts research that impact new policies and contributes to implementing and monitoring of indicators used in public programs.

Cebrap’s main focus is the analysis of Brazilian reality. Its work is based on comparisons and puts together specialization and overall views on both theories and methods of the multiple disciplines developed by researchers on Sociology, Government, Demography, Law, Philosophy, History, Anthropology, Economics and Geography.

Cebrap currently houses 39 permanent researchers and 140 associates, 60 of them holders of a master degree. This academic staff investigates several subjects: Social Development, Innovation, Sustainability, Cities, Urban Mobility, Social Inequality, Population, Healthcare, Education, NGOs, Democracy, Violence, Human Rights, Drug Policies and Religion. Most of this research help decision making of public institutions, civil associations and companies.

Cebrap is also known by its methodological skill, which uses both quantitative research such as surveys, georeferencing and analysis of social media impacts and qualitative data as in case-studies, ethnographic surveys, interviews and focused group analysis. Furthermore, Cebrap develops data visualization projects and conducts thematic courses, methodology workshops and research technique skills.

Cebrap publishes its research through different media: Cebrap New Studies, which is an interdisciplinary scientific publication containing contemporary research; the Virtual Library, the compiling of video archives and articles produced by Cebrap; and the traditional Cebrap Seminars, for fueling discussions on Brazilian political and social reality.

Cebrap is proud to have achieved a cross generation dialogue having been over the past decades a breeding ground of researchers, by offering them professional formation programs and national and international master degrees. The success of its programs can be confirmed by the great number of graduates appointed to distinguished positions in universities and different government levels.

As a result of Cebrap’s cross-generational exchanges, the research teams combine senior scientist’s mature experience with the vitality and new abilities of younger researchers.
